Honestly, not every store does — and any vendor who tells you otherwise is selling. The right answer depends on two numbers: your order volume and how much of it is cash on delivery. If you're small and mostly prepaid, Shopify's native checkout is genuinely fine. Once COD is a real slice of revenue and returns start eating margin, a checkout app stops being a nice-to-have. Here's how to tell which side of the line you're on.
When native Shopify checkout is enough
- Low order volume, where any added per-order cost outweighs the benefit.
- Mostly prepaid customers — UPI and cards — with little or no COD.
- A simple catalogue and few offers, where you don't need custom rules at checkout.
- No RTO problem worth solving yet.
When you need a checkout app
- COD is a meaningful share of orders and you have no way to score or filter it — COD verification for Shopify.
- RTO is climbing and there's nothing at checkout to stop the bad orders shipping — reduce RTO on Shopify.
- You want to run on your own payment gateway at the rate you negotiated, not someone else's rail.
- You need a UPI-first flow, offers, upsells or a one-page layout the native checkout won't give you.
| Your situation | Native is fine | You need a checkout app |
|---|---|---|
| COD share | Little to none | A real slice of revenue |
| RTO | Not a problem yet | Climbing / eating margin |
| Payment gateway | Happy on Shopify's | Want your own rate |
| Checkout needs | Simple, prepaid | UPI-first, offers, COD rules |
What a checkout app actually changes
- Turns COD from an on/off switch into rules — risk scoring, caps, pincode gating, partial COD.
- Puts UPI ahead of cards and shortens the address step.
- Lets you keep your gateway, your customer data and your offer logic.
- Feeds server-side conversions so your ads can see COD revenue too.
The cost question
The real fork isn't the monthly fee — it's whether the app takes a slice of every order or runs on the gateway you already have. At scale that difference dwarfs the subscription. Work through it with how to evaluate a checkout app and the scored best checkout apps for Shopify in India.
Decide in five minutes
- Is COD more than a small fraction of your orders? If no, native is probably fine.
- Is your RTO rate high enough to hurt? Estimate it with the RTO calculator.
- Do you want your own gateway and your own data? If yes, you've outgrown native.
Where IndiSell fits
IndiSell is the India-first option for the second group: your gateway, no per-order cut of GMV, a UPI-first 1-click flow, and COD run as rules rather than a toggle. The full picture and the checkout itself.
