How to reduce RTO on Shopify

RTO — the COD order that comes back undelivered — is the quietest margin leak on a COD-heavy Indian store. You can't fix it after the parcel ships; you fix it at checkout, before dispatch. Here are the six levers that move the number, and how IndiSell runs each.

The six levers

Every one acts before dispatch.

1. Score every COD order before it ships

IndiSell scores each COD attempt 0–100 from network history, address quality, order velocity and location — instantly, at checkout. You decide what each risk band does. The riskiest orders never reach dispatch as plain COD.

2. Take a partial advance on risky orders

Instead of blocking a risky COD outright (and losing the sale), collect a small amount online now — the rest on delivery. A shopper who's paid ₹100 opens the door; RTO on partial-COD orders drops sharply versus full COD.

3. Gate the pincodes and areas that never convert

Block or force-prepaid the specific pincodes and states your own data shows return most, with same-day COD caps per pincode so a burst of risky COD in one area can't pile up.

4. Nudge shoppers to prepaid

A prepaid order almost never RTOs. IndiSell offers a configurable “pay online and save ₹X” incentive and a UPI-first, one-tap prepaid path — shifting a share of COD to prepaid before the risk ever exists.

5. Confirm COD on WhatsApp

An automated WhatsApp confirmation on high-risk COD orders filters out the impulse and fake orders before you pay to ship them — a cheap step that removes a real slice of returns.

6. Verify the phone at checkout

OTP verification means the number on the order is real and reachable — the foundation for every rule above, and for reaching the shopper if the courier can't.

None of these need a courier or gateway switch — IndiSell is gateway- and logistics-agnostic, so the rules live in your checkout on top of the store you already run. New to the vocabulary? The glossary covers RTO, NDR and partial COD.

Questions people ask

Reducing RTO on Shopify — FAQ.

What is RTO and why does it cost so much?

RTO — return to origin — is a COD order that comes back undelivered. You pay forward and reverse shipping, you tie up inventory for the round trip, and you get nothing for it. On a COD-heavy Indian store, RTO is usually the single biggest silent margin leak. Put your own numbers into the RTO calculator to see the real cost per returned order.

How does IndiSell actually reduce RTO?

By acting before dispatch, not after. Every COD attempt is scored 0–100 and your rules decide the outcome per risk band — allow COD, take a partial advance, require prepaid, or block — backed by pincode/state gates, same-day caps, a WhatsApp confirmation step and prepaid incentives that shift risky orders to prepaid entirely. You configure all of it in your dashboard.

Will reducing RTO hurt my conversion?

It doesn't have to. Blocking every risky order would — that's why the partial-COD lever matters: a risky shopper still checks out, just with a small advance online. You keep the sale and cut the return. The goal is fewer returns at the same or better revenue, which you can watch in the numbers.

Do I need a specific courier or gateway to reduce RTO with IndiSell?

No. IndiSell is gateway-agnostic and logistics-agnostic — it works on top of your existing Shopify store, gateways and couriers. The RTO controls live in the checkout layer, so you don't have to standardise on one shipping or payments vendor to use them.
