How to evaluate a checkout app before you install it

Checkout sits between your traffic and your revenue. A buyer's checklist for judging one — beyond the conversion numbers on the landing page.

A checkout app is not a normal app install. It stands between every visitor and every rupee, it holds shopper data, and it changes how your money reaches you. Judge it like an infrastructure decision, not a growth experiment.

Money: whose account does it land in?

The first question is where settlement happens. A checkout that routes payments through its own merchant account holds your cash flow hostage to its solvency and its payout schedule. A checkout that runs on your own gateway accounts leaves the money path exactly as it was. Ask which model applies, then ask to see it on a live test order.

Reversibility: what happens if you uninstall on a Saturday?

The answer should be that the native checkout takes over immediately and your orders, customers and history stay where they always were, because they were real platform orders all along. If uninstalling requires a support ticket, a scheduled window, or a data export, the product has taken hostages.

Fit: does it know this market?

  • COD handled per order with risk scoring, not as a global on-off switch.
  • Phone-first identity with OTP, because in India the phone number is the account.
  • Address entry designed for how Indian addresses are actually written, including pincode-driven serviceability.
  • WhatsApp as a first-class channel for confirmation and recovery, not an email fallback.
  • GST-compliant invoicing and rate handling that your accountant recognises.

Measurement: can it prove its own claim?

Any vendor can quote a conversion lift. The useful question is whether the product will let you measure the lift yourself: a controlled rollout, your own before-and-after on the same traffic mix, funnel data you can export, and order-level records you can reconcile against the platform. A tool confident in its effect makes it easy to check.

Data and access hygiene

Ask what shopper data is stored and for how long (ours is documented on security), where it lives, who on the vendor's side can read it, and what happens to it when you leave. Ask whether card data ever touches their systems — it should not, because that belongs on the gateway's PCI-compliant surfaces. Ask for role-based access and an audit log if more than one person in your team will touch the settings.

Operational reality

  • Install effort: OAuth approval and settings, or a developer and theme edits?
  • Support hours in your timezone, and who answers during a sale weekend.
  • Configuration by dashboard with preview, or a ticket every time you change a rule?
  • Performance: what does the widget add to load time on a mid-range Android phone?

Run the pilot properly

Test on a private preview or draft theme with real products and real payment methods before any shopper sees it. Place a COD order, a UPI order, a coupon order and a deliberately broken one. Then go live to a slice of traffic and hold it there long enough to see delivered outcomes — not just placed orders. Checkout decisions look great at order time and honest three weeks later.

The question is never whether a checkout app converts better in a screenshot. It is what breaks, who owns the money, and how fast you can walk away.

If you're running this checklist right now, start with the feature tour and pricing — every claim on both pages is written to be checked, not believed.
