COD verification for Shopify
On a COD-heavy Indian store, the orders that hurt are the ones you ship and get back. COD verification catches them at checkout — a real phone, a risk score, a confirmation, and a partial advance where it counts — before you ever pay to dispatch.
Verify before you dispatch.
1. Verify the phone with OTP
Checkout starts with the phone number and a one-time password, so the contact on every order — COD included — is real and reachable. Fake numbers never make it to a COD order.
OTP checkout →2. Score the COD attempt 0–100
Each COD order is scored instantly from network history, address quality, order velocity and location. You set what each risk band does — the decision is a number you can see, not a guess.
Smart COD & RTO →3. Confirm risky orders on WhatsApp
High-risk COD orders get an automated WhatsApp confirmation before dispatch — a cheap filter that removes impulse and fake orders you'd otherwise pay to ship and get back.
WhatsApp messaging →4. Offer a partial advance, not a block
Instead of rejecting a risky COD outright, collect a small amount online now and the rest on delivery. You keep the sale, and a shopper who's paid ₹100 is far less likely to refuse the parcel.
Partial COD →Reducing returns is the flip side of this — see the full RTO-reduction playbook.
COD verification on Shopify — FAQ.
How does COD verification work on Shopify with IndiSell?
It happens at checkout, before dispatch. The shopper's phone is OTP-verified, the COD attempt is scored 0–100 for risk, and your rules decide the outcome per band — allow COD, take a partial advance, require prepaid, or block — with an optional WhatsApp confirmation step on high-risk orders. Native Shopify has no COD risk scoring; this adds it as a checkout layer.
Does COD verification stop fake and impulse orders?
It removes a real slice of them. OTP means the number is genuine; risk scoring flags the patterns that correlate with returns; and a WhatsApp confirmation makes a fake or impulse buyer opt in before you ship. You won't catch every bad order, but you stop paying to ship and reverse the worst of them.
Will verifying COD hurt my conversion?
Blocking every risky order would — which is why the partial-COD lever exists. A risky shopper still checks out, just with a small advance online. You keep the order and cut the return, rather than losing the sale outright.
Do I need a specific gateway for COD verification?
No. IndiSell is gateway-agnostic — connect Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, Easebuzz or others. The verification and risk rules live in the checkout, so they work on top of your existing Shopify store and payments setup.
