What you can and can't change about Shopify's checkout in India

Shopify's native checkout is fast, well tested and deliberately rigid. Knowing which parts are actually locked tells you where an Indian store has room to move.

The most common question from a growing Indian store is some version of: can I change the checkout? The honest answer is that Shopify gives you real control over branding and some behaviour, and very little over the flow itself — and the flow is where Indian-specific problems live.

What you get natively

  • Branding: logo, colours, typography and layout choices that make checkout look like your store.
  • Payment methods and their order, through your gateway configuration.
  • Shipping rates and zones, discounts, and the tax and invoicing settings an Indian store needs.
  • Cart and product-page apps that run before checkout begins.

What the native flow doesn't solve for India

The gaps are not aesthetic. A shopper still types a full address on every store, every time. COD is an all-or-nothing switch rather than a decision per order. There is no place to score risk before accepting an order, no partial payment, and no phone-verified identity that would let you reach an abandoner on WhatsApp or match a cash order back to the ad that produced it.

The three ways stores respond

  • Live with it, and absorb the RTO and the abandonment as a cost of doing business. Reasonable at low volume.
  • Bolt on point solutions — a COD confirmation app here, an address validator there — and accept that each one sees only its own slice of the order.
  • Replace the checkout surface with one built for the market, keeping Shopify as the system of record for orders, inventory and customers.

What to insist on if you replace it

A replacement checkout earns its place only if it is invisible when it works. That means it installs without theme edits, renders in isolation so your CSS and its CSS can never fight, keeps orders as genuine Shopify orders with your gateways settling into your own accounts, and can be switched off — with the native checkout resuming immediately — the day you decide it is not worth it. Anything that fails the last test is a migration, not an app.

Test it the way shoppers meet it

Before going live, run the whole thing on a slow mobile connection with one hand: a first-time buyer, a returning buyer, a COD order, a UPI order, a coupon, an out-of-zone pincode, and a deliberate failure like an expired OTP. Checkout quality is decided in those edges, not on the happy path a demo shows you.

Shopify's checkout is not badly built. It is built for a market where addresses autofill and everybody pays before the parcel moves.
