Every COD-heavy store dreams of a higher prepaid share: money in the bank before the parcel moves, no doorstep refusals, no remittance lag. The naive fix — switching COD off — reliably murders conversion, because a large slice of Indian shoppers treats COD as a trust mechanism, not a payment preference.
COD is how a first-time buyer says: I don't know you yet. Treat it as a trust problem, and pricing solves it. Treat it as a payment problem, and you lose the sale.
Make prepaid the visibly better deal
- Prepaid discount, shown in place: '₹539 with UPI' next to '₹598 with COD (incl. ₹49 fee)' does more than any banner. The comparison happens exactly at the decision.
- COD fee, honestly labelled: cash orders genuinely cost more to fulfil. A modest, visible fee is fair pricing — and a nudge.
- UPI-first ordering: put UPI at the top with the apps the shopper already uses. Defaults are destiny in checkout.
Give the nervous middle a bridge
Partial COD — a small advance online, the rest at the door — is the underrated workhorse. The shopper keeps the safety of paying mostly on delivery; you get commitment that makes them open the door. It also gives your risk engine a graduated response for medium-risk orders that's far better than a blunt block.
Let trust compound
A shopper who has had one smooth delivery from you is measurably more willing to prepay the next time — especially if checkout remembers them: verified phone, saved address, one tap to pay. Repeat-purchase flows are where prepaid share is won for good, which is why identity-first checkout and prepaid share are the same project.
Measure the shift, not the vibe
- Track prepaid share weekly, by traffic source and by new-vs-returning — the aggregate hides where the movement happens.
- Watch conversion alongside it: a prepaid push that drops overall conversion is just a COD ban in disguise.
- Feed your ad platforms server-side so the (higher-value) prepaid conversions actually inform bidding.
Move the price, offer the bridge, remember the shopper, and measure honestly. Prepaid share climbs a few points at a time — and every point is margin that stops riding in a courier bag.
