Google Automated Discounts let Google lower the price on a Shopping ad for a specific click, in real time, to win the sale. When the shopper lands on your product, the discounted price is meant to carry all the way through checkout. On Shopify's native checkout that happens by itself. On a checkout that replaces native, it only happens if that checkout was built to honor it — and if it wasn't, the shopper is quietly charged full price.
How the discount actually travels
When Google discounts a click, it appends a signed token to the landing URL carrying the discounted price. It's cryptographically signed by Google, so it can't be forged — but it also can't be read by a checkout that doesn't look for it. Shopify's native checkout reads it through the Google & YouTube channel and applies the lower price. Replace native checkout, and that step is now yours to reproduce.
What breaks when the discount is dropped
- The shopper sees ₹X in the ad and ₹Y > ₹X at checkout — a jarring mismatch that costs the conversion you paid Google for.
- Google Merchant Center compares the price it discounted against the price actually charged and flags a price mismatch — repeated mismatches disapprove the offer and shrink your Shopping reach.
- Your Shopping ROAS looks worse than it is, because the clicks Google discounted to convert are the ones that bounce at checkout.
What to ask any checkout vendor
One question settles it: “When Google sets an Automated Discount on a click, does your checkout charge that exact price?” If the answer is vague, assume it doesn't — the failure is invisible until Merchant Center disapproves an offer. This is a structural gap in any checkout that replaces Shopify's native flow, so it belongs on your evaluation checklist alongside gateways and COD rules; the comparison page treats it as a real dimension.
How IndiSell handles it
IndiSell verifies Google's signed token on the server and charges the exact discounted price, then holds that price in cart and checkout for 48 hours — which is what Google's program requires even after the token leaves the URL. Ad price matches checkout price, Merchant Center stays approved, and the Shopping click you paid for actually converts. It's part of the offer engine, and it stacks with the same server-side conversion tracking that lets Google see your COD revenue too. Turn it on with your Merchant ID; leave it off and nothing changes.
