Abandoned carts aren't dead — you just can't reach them

28 July 2026 · 6 min read · IndiSell team

Open any store's analytics and the same cliff appears: a crowd adds to cart, a fraction buys. The standard response is an email pop-up and a prayer. The standard result is single-digit recovery, because the plan has a hole at step zero — most abandoners never gave you an email, and the ones who did don't open it.

Identity is the whole game

A cart you can't attach to a reachable human is not recoverable; it's a statistic. This is why phone-first checkout changes recovery economics: when the very first step is an OTP-verified phone number, every abandoner past that step is a real person on the one channel Indians actually open — WhatsApp.

The sequence that respects the shopper

  • First touch on WhatsApp, ~30 minutes after the cart goes quiet — soon enough that intent is alive, late enough that you're not interrupting the comparison shop.
  • SMS hours later as the cheap, reliable fallback for the unread.
  • Email next day as the closer — room for product images and the full pitch.
  • Hard stop the moment the shopper returns or orders. Nothing burns trust like being chased for a cart you already bought.

The link matters as much as the message

A recovery message that dumps the shopper on your homepage recovers homepage visits. The link should reopen the exact cart — items, offer, verified session, saved address — one tap from paying. Signed links keep this safe: the cart opens for its owner without exposing saved details to whoever else touches the link.

Sweeten selectively, not reflexively

An automatic discount in every recovery message trains shoppers to abandon on purpose. Better: send the plain reminder first, and hold the comeback offer for later touches or higher-value carts. Track won-back revenue per touch so the data — not habit — decides where the discount lives.

Recovery isn't a growth hack; it's an identity problem wearing a messaging costume. Solve who, and when/what become easy.
